Bra Care FAQ

How should I wash my bras?

Hand wash, line dry only, with a gentle detergent.

I know it’s a pain. But even in wash bags, the fabric weakens by sitting in the detergent and won’t last as long compared to hand washing. Even without an agitator, the washer's cleaning motions can pull and twist your bra or cause it to wrap around other garments. One of the major causes of underwires breaking is from being washed in a washing machine (the other is by putting your bra on by twisting or spinning it, but that’s another topic for another day). The washer often quickly stretches out the elastic in your bra, resulting in a less comfortable fit and a shorter lifespan. Likewise, placing your bra in the dryer will also destroy the quality of the elastic in your bra, heating it and making it more brittle.

We highly recommend using Soak detergent. You only need to add a teaspoon of Soak detergent to a gallon of water. You soak your bra in the water with the detergent for 15 minutes. The purpose of Soak is to extract all the oils and dirt into the water, eliminating the need for any additional cleaning or rinsing. If you have a lot of deodorant buildup on the bra, you may need to scrub it a little bit to get it out. You wring out your bra and then hang it up to dry.

To make it even simpler, while you’re getting ready to shower, fill up your sink, add your bra, and Soak, then let them sit while you’re taking a shower. Your bra will be ready by the time you finish your shower. Just wring it out and hang it to dry. If you have a lot of deodorant buildup on the bra, you may need to scrub it a little bit to get it out.

How often should I wash my bras?

This is really more of a personal preference. This can vary depending on the number of bras you own, the type of activity you engage in during the day, or the time of year. For example, after exercising in a sports bra, you probably want to wash that right away. If you only have one or two bras that you wear, you probably want to wash them once a week. If you only wore a bra for a few hours during a period when you weren't particularly active or sweaty, you might not need to wash it as frequently. However, if you wore a bra at an outdoor festival for several hours in the summer and were sweaty, you’d probably want to wash that one right away too. As long as you are hand washing and line drying your bras, how often you wash them won’t really affect their quality.

How many bras should I own?

We always recommend having at least three. This allows you to alternate between washing, drying, and wearing your bras. In general, the more bras you rotate wearing, the longer your bras will last. If you only have one bra that you wear every single day, it will typically last about six months. With two or three, they will last for about a year.

What types of bras should I own?

  1. Everyday bra: a comfortable, neutral-toned bra that can be seamed or seamless.
  2. Strapless bra—for those special occasion dresses or tops that just won’t work with a regular bra.
  3. Sports bra: a bra designed to minimum bounce, prevent chafing, and wick away sweat.
  4. Plunge bra—a bra for your low-cut outfits.
  5. Confidence Boosting/Date Bra—this is the bra that makes you feel like you can take on the world! It looks great, and it makes you feel fabulous!
  6. Comfy wireless bra—for those days you just want to lounge around, this bra gives you just enough support, so you feel comfortable but has a barely there feeling.
